General Counsel

The General Counsel plays a pivotal role in defending an organization’s legal interests and in curbing any legal risks. They work hand-in-hand with other departments in an effort to ensure that a company’s business activities comply with prevailing legislation and standards.

Legal compliance: the General Counsel’s role is to ensure that an organization complies with all laws and regulations in force which apply to the relevant fields of expertise. This requires monitoring of legislative and regulatory developments which could affect the company in question.
Contract management : one of the General Counsel’s top priorities is to oversee the drafting, negotiation and performance of company contracts, whether in conjunction with customers, suppliers, partners or employees.
Corporate governance : the General Counsel ensures that a company’s operations align with its Articles of Association, not forgetting its in-house policies and corporate governance standards.
Litigation : in the event of a dispute, the General Counsel works with third-party lawyers as well as negotiating settlements, and where appropriate, acts as a representative in court for their organization.
Intellectual property (IP) : the General Counsel serves to protect a company’s intellectual property assets including its brands, patents and trademarks or copyright laws.
Risk management : the General Counsel is tasked with preparing for all eventualities an organization faces. In doing so, they identify, assess and mitigate any potential legal risks.
Training : by training employees in crucial legal matters and promoting awareness of compliance, the General Counsel guarantees lawful activities between and within each company department.
